Chargeable weight: Which one is used, actual weight or volumetric weight?
Two weights, the larger one is used
International logistics uses chargeable weight = max(actual weight, volumetric weight), meaning the greater of the two.
- Actual weight: The actual weight of the goods plus packaging (in kg).
- Volumetric weight: Reflects the space occupied by the goods, calculated using a formula.
Volumetric weight formula
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ Volumetric divisor

The volumetric divisor depends on the actual route and carrier rules.
Example
A box measuring 60 × 40 × 30 cm, actual weight 5 kg:
- Volumetric weight (using 6000) = 60 × 40 × 30 ÷ 6000 = 12 kg;
- Actual weight 5 kg < Volumetric weight 12 kg, so charge based on 12 kg.
Such light bulky goods (large volume, light weight) are typically charged by volumetric weight. After the goods arrive at the warehouse, the transit warehouse will measure the dimensions and actual weight, and then calculate the chargeable weight according to the route rules—never estimated arbitrarily.
